We’re thrilled to introduce Gamblin Solvent-Free—a remarkable, eco-friendly painting medium made from safflower oil and high-quality alkyd resin! This exceptional product enhances your artistic creations with delightful flow, stunning gloss, and beautiful transparency. For the best results, remember to mix it with your paint in moderation (up to 25% by volume) and apply it in thin layers. Your artwork will shine without any unsightly wrinkles. Happy painting!
Dive into the exciting realm of Solvent-Free Gel and Solvent-Free Fluid—wonderful painting mediums made from pure safflower oil and premium alkyd resin, completely free of added solvents! We’ve selected safflower oil for its lovely light colour, making it a welcome addition to your palette. Thanks to the unique properties of alkyd resin, these mediums dry faster than traditional linseed or safflower oils. You’ll love the “moderately fast” drying rate that allows thin layers to touch-dry in just 48–72 hours!
One of the standout features of our Solvent-Free line is its extended working time, perfect for those artists who want to fine-tune their masterpieces. We also offer straight Safflower Oil, ideal for brush cleaning and for creating slower-drying mediums for those who prefer more time to perfect their techniques.
Now, let’s explore the difference between the Solvent-Free Fluid and Gel. The Fluid significantly enhances flow, mimicking linseed or safflower oil but with a quicker drying time, yielding beautifully rounded brush marks. Meanwhile, the Solvent-Free Gel has a denser texture, similar to tube paint, allowing for sharp, defined brushstrokes while boosting flow and colour saturation. Both options are perfect for artists seeking that buttery feel and looking to elevate their painting experience!
Features:
Experience the unique blend of safflower oil and soy-based alkyd resin, meticulously crafted without Gamsol or petroleum distillates. This composition not only promotes a safer environment but also enhances your creative journey!
Experience the joy of quick drying with this oil! In just 2 to 3 days, it’s ready to go—faster than untreated safflower oil. It's an ideal choice for your projects when you need efficiency without compromising quality. Get started and watch your creativity flourish!
This application is ideal for vibrant direct painting techniques, whether you're capturing the essence of nature outdoors with plein air or embracing the spontaneous energy of alla prima.
Using Solvent-Free Mediums Effectively
When using this range of Solvent-Free materials, it’s important to consider their role and limitations in painting. Like any medium, their main purpose is to alter the consistency and working properties of oil colours straight from the tube. Both Solvent-Free Gel and Solvent-Free Fluid are 100% fat, similar to straight drying oils. As with any oil-based medium, they should be used sparingly—up to 25% by volume when mixed with oil colours—and applied in thin layers. Because of these constraints, Solvent-Free materials are best suited for direct, "alla prima" painting, which is common among most artists. Notably, Solvent-Free Gel has gained popularity among plein air painters for its ability to preserve painterly brush strokes and enhance colour saturation. Additionally, it offers the practical advantage of being convenient to pack in checked luggage for painters travelling with their supplies.
Restrictions of solvent-free painting
When it comes to painting techniques that use delicate washes of colour, especially in those exciting early stages, it’s important to choose the right mediums! Solvent-Free mediums aren't the best choice here, as these oil-rich options should be used sparingly with your tube colours. Think of them as the “fat” in the Fat Over Lean principle. For underpainting, stick to oil colours right from the tube or mix them with a dash of Gamsol or a light, fluid medium like Galkyd Lite—just a hint of Gamsol can make your colours come alive! For those gorgeous deep, transparent glazes, Galkyd mediums are your best friends. Options like Galkyd, Galkyd Lite, Galkyd Gel, and Galkyd Lite Gel will help you achieve stunning layers with ease. Happy painting!
