Winsor and Newton Designers Gouache is designed for professional illustrators working on graphic reproduction projects. It is also popular in fine art painting, used either on its own or combined with transparent watercolours.
The primary colours in Designers Gouache—Primary Yellow, Primary Red, Primary Blue, Permanent Green Middle, Ivory Black, and Zinc White—are chosen for their ability to create vivid, bright mixes, ensuring optimal colour blending. Its opacity and matte finish are achieved through a high pigment load, resulting in a lower binder-to-pigment ratio than Winsor & Newton watercolours.
Cracking generally occurs due to two common causes: either not enough water is used for dilution, leading to a thicker film that cracks as it dries (note that the required water amount varies by colour), or multiple layers are applied, where the top layer may crack if the underlying layer absorbs the binder in the wet colour.
