M. Graham artists' oil colours are produced using pure walnut oil — renowned for its brilliance, clarity, and resistance to yellowing — in accordance with the tradition of Renaissance masters. Crafted in small batches, these colours are delicately free-flowing, solvent-free, and free of fillers or additives. The result is vibrant, lustrous paint with exceptional pigment concentration that endures for years.

Why Walnut Oil?

Walnut oil's distinctive refractive index and non-yellowing characteristics yield colours that appear more naturally vivid and luminous. It also enhances pigment content across all colours, delivering exceptional richness, saturation, brilliance, and tinting strength.

Solvent Free

M. Graham's commitment to environmental sustainability extends to the artist's workspace. Without solvents, artists can use walnut oil for brush cleaning — a safe, natural alternative that eliminates the risks associated with traditional solvents.

Composition & Permanence

The colour index name, issued by the American Association of Textile Chemists and Colourists and the Society of Dyers and Colourists, is a generic label that helps artists understand a pigment's general opacity, transparency, and lightfastness. It does not identify a specific pigment grade. Numerous grades are available from various manufacturers, each with distinct physical properties.

Chemical Name

The chemical name is a concise, widely recognized generic designation describing the pigment's composition. Used alongside the colour index name, it helps artists better understand the pigment's origin and nature.

Permanence

Permanence measures a pigment's lightfastness when dispersed in a vehicle and exposed to conditions that emulate fine arts display. Ratings are vehicle- and medium-dependent — a pigment lightfast in oil may not be lightfast in watercolour. M. Graham's ratings draw on historical data, accelerated testing, and pigment manufacturer data, establishing one of the toughest standards among artists' colour makers.

Transparency & Opacity

Each colour carries a designation indicating its relative degree of transparency to opacity. Note that any thin-film application, while not necessarily transparent, may be perceived as such.
