Indigo
DANIEL SMITH's Indigo formula combines Indanthrone Blue with Lamp Black to produce an extremely lightfast, intense dark that closely resembles true Indigo. Transparent yet highly pigmented, this Indigo leaves a subtle faded blue denim stain when blotched from damp paint. Subjects like blueberries, blackberries, and plums are ideal for experimenting with this technique. Use Indigo whenever dusty purples are needed. It also evokes atmospheric depth, making it perfect for expressive, moody skies. Apply flowing short strokes of Indigo into water, and add touches of Sepia and Quinacridone Burnt Orange to depict branches and birch trees. Historically, Indigo has been a significant blue dye since ancient Egyptian times, important in fabrics and art materials, though not as lightfast as DANIEL SMITH’s Indigo Watercolour. Natural Indigo, called anil, is derived from the indigofera plant's sprigs. In the late 1600s, the primary source was the French West Indies, where large indigofera crops were grown and harvested just before flowering. After harvesting, the plants were processed in vats, filtered in water, and then dried into cakes for export.

Ultramarine Blue
Ultramarine Blue appears cooler and bluer compared to the more saturated French Ultramarine. Aside from temperature, both colours share equal levels of permanence, lightfastness, and transparency. Ultramarine Blue
is marginally less granular in concentrated washes. For lower saturation, sedimentation, and cost, use Ultramarine Blue directly for vivid, crayon-like colours, or blend it with a cool red to produce dark, effective neutrals.
Both Ultramarine Blue and French Ultramarine contain pigment PB29. However, Ultramarine features a smaller particle size, making it slightly
greener and cooler, whereas French Ultramarine has a larger particle size and leans slightly redder and warmer.

French Ultramarine
This medium-to-dark, warm reddish-blue hue is highly lightfast with medium tinting strength. Its sedimentary nature enhances its versatility. When mixed with various other blues, French Ultramarine makes a beautiful sky colour. Add Quinacridone Gold for vibrant, coordinated greens. Combining French Ultramarine with Quinacridone Burnt Orange produces a stunning
spectrum of blue to brown grays. Mixing it with Quinacridone Rose or Pink yields a range of purples. For another key mix, check out Hooker’s Green and Sap Green.
Although Ultramarine Blue and French Ultramarine both contain pigment PB29, Ultramarine has smaller particles and leans more toward green and cooler tones. In comparison, French Ultramarine has larger particles and tends to be redder and warmer.

Cerulean Blue Chromium
This sky-blue inorganic pigment is beautiful on its own and even more appealing when mixed with a transparent pigment. It has a granular texture and a medium-light value. Known for its high permanence and low staining, Cerulean Blue produces lively granulation and settling washes. When a small amount of Cerulean Blue is added to a damp wash of Burnt Sienna, it creates a halo effect around the denser colour, which is especially effective when combined with Quinacridone Gold or Quinacridone Burnt Orange in the underpainting. This technique is ideal for depicting lichen and Spanish moss. Incorporate DANIEL SMITH-exclusive colours such as Buff Titanium, Undersea Green, and Lunar Black for greater creative possibilities. Cerulean also works
well as a mixer to create misty landscapes or to achieve a dusky tone on eggplant, grapes, and plums.

DANIEL SMITH’s Sap Green is excellent, offering the beloved hue along with lasting permanence. This non-fugitive formula produces a deep, forest-shadow green that blends with French Ultramarine, mossy gold-greens, and green-browns when combined with Burnt Sienna, Quinacridone Sienna, or Burnt Orange. Enviro Friendly Yellow Iron Oxide
Enviro-Friendly Yellow Iron Oxide is a rich, deep ochre hue. DANIEL SMITH Enviro-Friendly Watercolours feature colours not derived from
green, but created through an eco-conscious process. We source pigments from the Earth's crust using Iron Oxide Recovery (IOR), which removes iron oxides that pollute mine water, cleaning it so it can safely flow back into streams—supporting a healthier environment. The recovered iron oxide undergoes thorough washing and is then used to produce three stunning shades: from a warm golden yellow to a deep red earth, ending with a vibrant, dark brown with a bluish tint.

The fine, transparent Quinacridone particles gather and recede, creating pockets of colour surrounded by premixed grays. Highly durable and exceptionally transparent, all DANIEL SMITH Quinacridone hues deliver vivid clarity and intense colour.

The vibrant Perylene Maroon produces luminous washes that appear to glow and seem to emerge from a saturated source into sunlight patches. Like other staining pigments, it works well for creating organic textures by applying salt and lifting pigment for highlights. Its semi-transparent quality makes Perylene Maroon particularly suitable for creating rich browns.

Gray Titanium
Gray Titanium is a mid-tone warm gray with a slight yellow hue. It is semi-transparent, granulating, non-staining, and has excellent
lightfastness. Its colour and texture make it ideal for depicting dusty desert animals like deer, elephants, and tortoises, as well as birds with camouflaged feathers that blend into dry woodlands, savannas, and deserts, such as roadrunners and burrowing owls. In landscapes, Gray Titanium's granulation works beautifully for light-colored, textured tree and shrub trunks, branches, and twigs. It is also useful in urban scenery, where light washes can resemble concrete structures. As a single pigment, Gray Titanium mixes well with other colours, adding warmth and softness due to its semi-transparent nature.

Enviro Friendly Red Iron Oxide
This versatile red-brown appears as a deep brick hue when at full strength. In lighter washes, it reveals a warm, transparent, earthy rose. It’s an ideal brown-pink shade for portraiture, mimicking the natural red tint on cheeks and lips. DANIEL SMITH Enviro-Friendly Watercolours are eco-conscious; although the colours aren’t green, the process is! These paints are made from pigments sourced from the earth’s crust using Iron Oxide Recovery (IOR). This process removes coloured iron oxides from mine water, reducing pollution and cleaning it so it can safely re-enter streams, thereby promoting a cleaner environment. The recovered iron oxide is carefully washed and used to produce a range of rich colours, from a warm golden yellow to a deep red earth tone and a vibrant dark brown with a bluish undertone. These reclaimed and refined pigments offer an earth-friendly choice without compromising on colour quality.

Enviro Friendly Brown Iron Oxide
When used at full strength, the deep umber of the Enviro-Friendly Brown Iron Oxide is ideal for creating warm shadows and dark tones. When mixed with water, it produces a vivid, granulating wash that displays warm cinnamon hues alongside a darker granulation pattern. Enviro-Friendly pigments are reclaimed and refined, providing an environmentally conscious choice without compromising colour quality. DANIEL
SMITH Enviro-Friendly Watercolours are notable not only for their colours but also for their eco-friendly process. We utilize pigments from the earth’s crust through a method called Iron Oxide Recovery (IOR). This process removes coloured iron oxides from mine water by filtering it, allowing it to re-enter streams and promoting a healthier environment safely. The recovered iron oxide is carefully washed and used to produce three rich shades: a warm golden yellow, a deep red earth, and a saturated dark brown with a bluish undertone.

Sepia
Low-staining and lightfast, this semi-transparent
black-brown is a fundamental palette colour. When applied in concentrated strokes, it has a rich, deep appearance, but it can also be diluted to a subtle mushroom tone. You can observe this transition in washes, from near to far or shadow to light, especially in plowed fields and farm scenes. Painting fence posts—particularly the wet, West Coast variety—can be enjoyable, as are bulrushes and cattails. Experiment with wet-on-wet techniques for interesting effects.

Graphite Gray
Exploring this colour reveals some unexpected pigment qualities beyond its obvious opacity. Graphite Gray disperses easily and rapidly in water, making it an intriguing technique for floating the dense pigment on the surface or into a wet wash. Applying a dry brush stroke followed
quickly by a wet one can spread some pigment, creating a dry-brush-like texture. This approach works well for aged and weathered wood, fence posts, and old buildings. Try this: over a value sketch, add a light glaze. Since graphite pencil is perfectly acceptable in watercolour, using synthetic graphite pigment like Graphite Gray feels quite natural.

Jane’s Grey
Jane’s Grey stands out as a distinctive colour in the market. Unlike most grays—such as Payne’s Gray, Neutral Tint, or others—which typically contain black pigment and often include phthalo blue, Jane Blundell sought a gray that avoided the dulling effects of black and the staining tendencies of phthalo blue. She desired a gray that is liftable and granulating, perfect for depicting stormy skies and soft shadows. It also
serves as a neutral tint that darkens colours without altering their hue. Using a gray made from palette colours helps maintain colour harmony in artworks. Although many artists mix ultramarine blue and burnt sienna for rich darks, no ready-made option existed for this beautiful blend, so she created it for convenience. She initially mixed it in pans and palettes, but as demand grew, she produced it in tubes. A few years ago, Jane approached DANIEL SMITH to make Jane’s Grey widely available. Now part of our Signature Series, Jane’s Grey is semi-transparent, granulating, low-staining, and highly lightfast.

Alvaro’s Fresco Grey
“Alvaro’s Fresco Grey is a very powerful and authentic hue, without any artificial appearance. It’s passionate and mysterious, ideal for evoking distant or even unknown elements. I really love this colour.” Alvaro describes his Fresco and Caliente Greys as embodying “magnetism, fury, energy… power. You know, greys… they evoke feelings of danger, emotion, passion… mystery… and the unknown… darkness. I use these greys to create paintings that exude magnetism, energy, mystery, and passion—things to be discovered in the darkness and the unknown. To me, both colours carry this exact feeling.” -Alvaro Castagnet.
Part of our Signature Series, Alvaro’s Fresco Grey presents as a cool midnight tone in solid form and a misty cooling hue in washes. It blends well with other colours, toning them down and imparting a subtle coolness. This semi-transparent, granulating paint is low in staining and boasts excellent lightfastness.”

When combined with any other colour, Neutral Tint creates richer, darker shades of that hue. Our chemist developed this perfect neutral gray—neither warm nor cool—that quickly and consistently dulls colours while producing deep, luminous darks. Since its creation in 2012, artists have regarded Neutral Tint as an essential tool for broadening their colour palettes.

species, but that practice has thankfully ended. When mixed with yellow, Ivory Black produces a blackened green ideal for backlit foliage. It evokes sumi ink and hand-painted stone lithographs. Additionally, it can be used to deepen transparent pigments.

PRIMATEK WATERCOLOUR
Discover your creative inspiration with the world's largest selection of watercolours—totalling 272 shades across three lines: Extra Fine, PrimaTek, and Luminescent. DANIEL SMITH launched the PrimaTek line in 1998, using minerals—some semi-precious, like Lapis Lazuli—to create these paints. We employ a mineralogist to source the minerals, which are then processed into pigments and milled into watercolour paint. PrimaTeks are known for their stunning granulation, adding a sense of movement and depth that some artists find magical. Crafted to surpass industry standards, each batch undergoes comprehensive testing for lightfastness, colour strength, tinting power, clarity, vibrancy, undertone, particle size, density, and viscosity. Create with vibrant, consistent colours that mix easily to produce countless variations.
LUMINESCENT WATERCOLOUR
Luminescent Watercolour types include Iridescent, Interference, Duochrome, and Pearlescent. Iridescent reflects light like a mirror; Interference scatters light; Duochrome shifts between two colours; Pearlescent adds opalescence. These colours are perfect for illustrating nature's shimmering effects, such as bird feathers, fish, shells, or glowing objects like the moon, clouds, rainbows, snow, ice, and metals. They are ideal for depicting fantasy themes involving iridescence, like fairies, dragons, and mermaids.
These unique watercolours are nature-inspired colours with optical effects that standard colours can't replicate. These colours feature an iridescent sheen, shimmer, sparkle, or colour shift common in birds’ feathers, insects, fish, flowers, metals, and water. Their luminous quality offers artists a broader palette of options. Designed to surpass top industry standards, each batch is carefully tested for performance aspects such as lightfastness, colour value, tinting strength, clarity, vibrancy, undertone, particle size, density, and viscosity. Artists can create everything with vibrant, consistent colours that mix easily for even more variations.
DETAILS
Luminescent Watercolour Definitions: Iridescent, Interference, Duochrome and Pearlescent.
Iridescent: Reflection – A particle of light strikes the paint or pigment matrix and reflects, similar to a mirror.
Interference: Refraction – A particle of light enters the paint or pigment matrix and scatters light.
Duochrome: a single pigment that alternates between two colours.
Pearlescent: adds opalescence – similar to an opal or pearl – in relation to the colour it is blended or coated with.
DANIEL SMITH Luminescent Watercolours are ideal for illustrating nature's unique visual effects. Nature showcases stunning displays through bright colours in birds’ feathers, insects, fish, and seashells. Many plants also have a shiny, dewy appearance. Examples include the iridescence of a snail’s trail or the silvery sheen of a spider’s web.
Other luminous or shimmering objects, depending on the lighting, include a moon that looks silvery or golden, sunset-lit clouds, rainbows, the sparkling reflection of snow and ice, and glistening water.
Metals such as pewter, copper, silver, and gold exhibit this sheen as well. Mythical beings like fairies, dragons, mermaids, and other fantasy creatures are often depicted with extraordinary iridescence. To bring these enchanting motifs to life, special paints such as DANIEL SMITH Luminescent Watercolours are ideal!
