Description
Description
Artist's Oil Colour is buttery and vibrant, wax-free paint, crafted from premium pigments with strong tinting power and coverage; it can be applied thickly or as a very fine glaze. Each tone is carefully formulated for durability, strong tinting power, and excellent coverage.
Apply them generously with palette knives or brushes, or dilute them into a very fine glaze. The quality standards emphasize using single pigments whenever possible to achieve pure, distinct colours. Mixing these single pigments ensures precise, clean colour blending, offering endless colour options. The range includes 81 individual pigment colours.
WINSOR & NEWTON ARTISTS' OIL PAINT SPECIFICATIONS
Colour Index Name: Each pigment is universally identified by its Colour Index Generic Name. For example, Cobalt Blue is known as Pigment Blue 28, abbreviated to PB28.
Series: The Series number reflects the relative price of the colour, primarily based on pigment costs. Series 1 is the most affordable, while Series 5 is the most expensive. If there is no series column, the price is the same across the entire range.
T/O—Transparency/Opacity: Transparent colours are labelled ‘T', and semi-transparent ones are ‘ST'. Opaque colours are marked ‘O ', with semi-opaque as ‘SO'. Keep in mind, transparency is relative, so these ratings are only approximate. Also, thinner colour films look more transparent than thicker ones.
Permanence: An artist's colour permanence refers to its durability when applied with a brush on paper or canvas, properly graded, and displayed behind glass in a dry room exposed to regular daylight and typical town conditions. In simple terms, it indicates a colour's resistance to fading when exposed to light and environmental factors.
AA - Extremely Permanent
A - Permanent
B - Moderately Durable
C - Fugitive
For further information on some colours, the rating may include one or more of the following additions:
(i) A rated in full strength may fade in thin washes
(ii) Cannot be relied upon to withstand damp
(iii) Bleached by acids, acidic atmospheres
(iv) Fluctuating colour; fades in light, recovers in dark
(v) Should not be prepared in pale tints with Flake White, as these will fade
(vi) A rated with a coating of fixative
Lightfastness is indicated by an ASTM rating, which reflects the pigment's durability against light. ASTM stands for the American Society for Testing and Materials, an organization that establishes standards for art materials, including lightfastness. The rating system shows that the highest lightfastness in this system is marked as 'I,' while 'V' is the lowest. However, ratings I and II are regarded as permanent for artists' use.
When a Winsor and Newton colour lacks an ASTM rating, it is marked as N/L, meaning "Not Listed." This usually suggests that ASTM has not yet tested the pigment or range type. However, this does not necessarily mean the colour is not lightfast. In such cases, it’s advisable to consult Winsor & Newton's permanence rating, which assesses factors such as lightfastness and indicates the colour's resistance to fading.
