Description

In accordance with the tradition established by esteemed masters, M. Graham artists’ oil colours are produced using pure walnut oil, renowned for its brilliance, clarity, texture, and resistance to fading and yellowing. These colours are carefully crafted in small batches, adhering to the principles of Renaissance painting: delicately free-flowing, solvent-free, and free of fillers or additives. Due to the high pigment concentration in M. Graham oil colours, your artwork will be vibrant and lively, exhibiting rich, lustrous hues that endure over many years.

Details: Why Walnut Oil?

M Graham selected the walnut oil medium for their oil paints due to its distinctive refractive index and non-yellowing characteristics, which yield colours that appear more naturally vivid and luminous. Furthermore, walnut oil enhances pigment content across all colours, resulting in exceptional richness, saturation, brilliance, and tinting strength.

Solvent Free

M. Graham's commitment to environmental sustainability also influences the artist. Removing solvents from the workspace encourages artists to use walnut oil for brush cleaning, providing a safe, natural alternative that reduces the risks associated with traditional solvents.

Composition and Permanence

The colour index name is issued by the American Association of Textile Chemists and Colourists and the Society of Dyers and Colourists. It serves as a generic label and does not identify a specific pigment. While it helps artists understand a pigment's general opacity, transparency, and lightfastness within a colour space, it doesn't provide detailed information. Numerous pigment grades are available from various manufacturers, each with distinct physical properties.

Chemical Name

The chemical name is a concise, widely recognized generic designation that describes the pigment's composition. In conjunction with the colour index name, it helps artists gain a clearer understanding of the pigment's origin and nature.

Permanence

The permanence of a colour is a measure of the lightfastness of the pigment when dispersed in a vehicle and subjected to conditions which emulate the exposure usually given a fine arts object. Such ratings are generally considered vehicle- or medium-dependent and can vary across media; pigment that is suitably lightfast for oil colour may not be lightfast in watercolour. Our ratings use a combination of historical data, accelerated testing, and pigment manufacturer data to establish one of the toughest standards among artists' colour makers today.

Transparency and Opacity

Each of our colours is assigned a designation indicating the relative degree of transparency to opacity. Please consider these guidelines, as any thin-film application, while not necessarily transparent, can be perceived as such.
