Artisan Water Mixable Oil Colour has been explicitly formulated to emulate traditional oil paint. It serves as an excellent alternative to hazardous solvents, using water without compromising quality. The product is engineered to look and perform identically to conventional oil paints.

These remarkable paints are designed to mimic the appearance and performance of traditional oil paint; the primary distinction between Artisan and conventional oils is that Artisan paints can be diluted and cleaned with water. This eliminates the need for hazardous solvents, thereby providing artists with a safer working environment. Consequently, it is particularly suitable for artists who share a workspace, attend art school, or paint indoors at home, as no ventilation is required.

Artisan Water Mixable Oil Paints are designed to resemble traditional oil paints in appearance and handling, but without the need for hazardous solvents. Unlike conventional oils, these paints can be thinned and cleaned using water, making brush and tool cleanup simple with brush soap and water. The collection features a balanced selection of 40 colours, including 25 single pigment shades that ensure vibrant hues and straightforward colour blending.

Artisan is perfect for artists sharing a workspace, students, or home use because it doesn't require hazardous solvents. It's a safer choice for a better painting environment and is convenient to travel with.

Pigments and Binder: The Artisan formulation does not contain water; the linseed and safflower oils have been modified to allow the colour to accept water. This creates a stable emulsion and retains the working characteristics of conventional oil colour.

The pigments highlight each colour’s qualities, ranging from opacity to natural transparency, using the most appropriate oil.

Consistency and Texture: A rich, buttery texture allows for a range of techniques, and the colour can be lightened as required.

Surface Sheen: Each pigment needs a different amount of oil, and the sheen can vary slightly between colours within the formulation. Additionally, using water as a solvent and medium will affect the brightness.

Complementary Mediums: Artisan offers a variety of thinners, oils, mediums, and varnishes designed to support all oil painting techniques. Made specifically for artists, these products guarantee optimal performance and provide a painting experience that closely resembles traditional oil painting.

ASTM RATING

Lightfastness: The pigment's lightfastness is indicated by an ASTM rating. The abbreviation ASTM represents the American Society for Testing and Materials. This organization establishes standards for the performance of artistic materials, including the lightfastness of colours. The highest rating within this system signifies the most durable lightfastness, while V denotes the lowest. Nonetheless, ratings I and II are considered permanent for artists' applications.

In cases where no ASTM rating is provided for a Winsor and Newton colour, it is designated as N/L, signifying "Not Listed." This typically suggests that the ASTM testing for the pigment or the specific range has not yet been conducted. It does not inherently imply a deficiency in lightfastness.

In such instances, it is advisable to consult the Winsor and Newton permanence rating, which assesses colour based on various factors, including lightfastness, and indicates a colour’s capacity to withstand fading.

Colour Index Name: Each pigment is universally identifiable by its Colour Index Generic Name. For instance, Cobalt Blue is designated as Pigment Blue 28 (PB28).

Series: The series number indicates the relative cost of the colour, primarily determined by pigment cost. Series 1 represents the most economical option, while Series 5 is the costliest. The absence of a series column indicates that the price remains consistent throughout the range.

T/O - Transparency/Opacity: Transparent colours are designated as ‘T' and semi-transparent as ‘ST.' Opaque colours are designated as ‘O ' and semi-opaque as ‘SO.' However, it is important to note that transparency is relative to the ratings provided, which are intended solely as a guide. Furthermore, any thin film of colour will appear more transparent than a thicker layer.

Permanence: The durability of an artist's colour is characterized as ‘its capacity to withstand time when applied with a brush on paper or canvas, appropriately graded, and subsequently displayed within a glass frame in a dry environment subject to standard daylight and typical urban atmospheric conditions.'

In simpler terms, they resist change when exposed to light and the atmosphere.

AA - Extremely Permanent
A - Permanent
B - Moderately Durable
C - Fugitive

For further information on some colours, the rating may include one or more of the following additions:

(i) A' rated in full strength may fade in thin washes
(ii) Cannot be relied upon to withstand damp
(iii) Bleached by acids, acidic atmospheres
(iv) Fluctuating colour; fades in light, recovers in dark
(v) Should not be prepared in pale tints with Flake White, as these will fade
(vi) A' rated with a coating of fixative
