Gamblin PVA Size is a neutral-pH, animal-free sizing solution recommended by conservation experts as a modern alternative to traditional rabbit-skin glue. Apply it to raw canvas or paper before oil painting to create a stable, flexible sealing layer that protects the support from the acidity of oil paints — without swelling, shrinking, or yellowing over time.

On canvas:

• Apply one coat to the front before or after stretching; add a coat to the back if pinholes are visible
• PVA Size will initially tighten a damp canvas but may relax slightly as it dries
• For large canvases or lightweight linen, apply before stretching to prevent buckling
• Linen can shrink as it dries — cut fabric slightly larger to allow for this
• Clean brushes with soap and water immediately after use

On paper:

• Apply two coats to the painting side only; allow 24 hours between coats
• Tape paper to a sturdy panel before applying to prevent wrinkling; remove tape only when fully dry
• Once dry, paper retains its original appearance

Painting on PVA Size alone:

• Allows the natural colour and texture of canvas or paper to show through
• Apply two thin coats to minimize absorbency while preserving surface texture
• Protects the support from oil paint acidity without a traditional primer
