• A cold press ("not") surface finish is produced by pressing the still wet paper with a textured surface like a felt mat. This is the most popular finish for beginners and those working in a traditional manner as it gives a unique character to brushstrokes, washes and line work in paint, ink and pencil. 
• A hot press surface finish is formed by pressing the still wet paper with a fine wire screen, offering a detail sensitive paper (smooth vellum finish with a very fine tooth) for those who are working with soft drawing materials, wash, airbrush and pen and ink.
• A rough surface finish, with its pronounced peaks and valleys, provides many rewarding challenges and amazing effects for the experienced watercolourist.
