Acrylic Painting FAQs

Acrylic Painting FAQs

Acrylic painting can be a challenge, especially if you don’t know exactly what you’re doing.

Some newbies mix different techniques up, don’t use the right supplies, and just end up creating a lot more chaos than they initially intended. But, nobody learns until they don’t practice.

Here are some acrylic painting FAQs, answered!

Which Brushes Should I Use?

Generally, the rule of thumb is— the more expensive the brush, the better the quality. Though this is true in this case too, there are many excellent quality synthetic brushes available in the market. Instead of spending hundreds of dollars on brushes made of real hair, you can opt for brushes made of synthetic materials.

What Other Supplies Do I Need?

For acrylic painting, you should consider investing in a palette, dry round brushes for texture, and a stylus. Instead of buying brushes separately, opt for a variety pack since it’ll probably include everything you’re looking for, and won’t cost you an arm and a leg!

How To Mix Acrylic Paints?

Mixing acrylics is quite a process. That’s why you should know the colour wheel really well.

Use a palette knife or a plastic knife, whichever one you’ve got to mix acrylic paints. Mix whichever ones to create a specific colour, but keep in mind that certain colours can dry darker. You’ll get a better idea through practice.

How To Keep Acrylic Paints Wet?

Acrylic paints dry pretty fast, which makes them a little difficult to work with if you’re a slow painter. A great tip is to paint bigger compositions of your picture on the canvas first, and then work on smaller components. Paint bigger shapes faster with a bigger brush, and use smaller brushes for details that take longer to fill in. Additionally, you can also use a paint mister to keep them from drying out too fast.

Can You Use Watercolour Techniques With Acrylics?

Most people start out using watercolours, because they’re easier to use and paint with. The good news here is that you can apply whatever techniques you’ve learned painting with watercolours, because both paint mediums dry quickly.

However, a point to note is that acrylic paints can’t be rehydrated when dried, unlike watercolour paints.
